Fertility Preservation: Egg, Sperm and Embryo Freezing
Fertility preservation stores eggs, sperm or embryos now so they can be used later. People come to it for two quite different reasons, and the decisions look different in each case.
Some are planning ahead. They are not trying to conceive yet, and want to keep the option open while their reproductive potential is higher. Others are facing medical treatment that may affect fertility, and need to act quickly, often within days.

Planned fertility preservation
This is a decision about time. Egg quantity and quality both decline with age, gradually at first and then more steeply, and freezing eggs stores them as they are at the point of retrieval rather than as they will be later.
What it does not do is guarantee a future pregnancy. It improves the options available later. Anyone presenting it as insurance is overstating it, and you should be sceptical of that framing wherever you encounter it.
Medically indicated fertility preservation
Some medical treatments, including certain cancer treatments, can affect fertility. Preservation before treatment begins can protect future options.
These cases are usually time-critical and are coordinated around the treating team’s schedule. If this applies to you, say so when you call rather than waiting for a routine appointment slot, because the useful window can be short.
What can be stored
- Eggs (oocyte vitrification) — for a person who wants to preserve their own eggs without deciding about a partner or sperm source now.
- Sperm — the simplest of the three, and often relevant before medical treatment that may affect fertility.
- Embryos — where there is a partner and the decision to fertilise now has already been made. Embryo storage carries consent considerations that eggs alone do not, and those are explained before anything is stored.
How egg freezing works
- Assessment Ovarian reserve and general health are assessed, and the likely yield is discussed honestly before you commit to a cycle.
- Stimulation Roughly two weeks of medication to encourage several follicles to develop, with monitoring by ultrasound.
- Retrieval A short day procedure under sedation to collect the eggs. Some cramping and bloating afterwards is common.
- Vitrification Eggs are rapidly frozen and stored. Vitrification is the technique that made egg freezing reliable enough to offer routinely.
- Storage Eggs remain in storage until used, with the arrangements, consents and review points agreed at the outset.
What preservation does and does not promise
It preserves options. It does not guarantee a baby, and the number of eggs retrieved in one cycle does not translate directly into a number of future pregnancies. Some eggs do not survive thawing, not all that survive fertilise, and not all embryos implant.
A clinic that quotes you a probability without knowing your ovarian reserve is guessing. The realistic conversation is about your own assessment, and it is worth having before a cycle rather than after.
